What It Takes to Be a Successful Health Coach
Health coaching is using evidence-based conversation, clinical interventions and strategies in order to actively and safely engage their clients to achieve a health change. A health coach is either certified or credentialed to guide their clients that are suffering from chronic conditions, or those that are at moderate to high risk to develop chronic conditions.
Health coaching is based on clinical interventions like motivational interviewing that will facilitate behavioral change, the transtheoretical method of change, setting goals, active listening, trending and aggregation of health outcome metrics, and prevention.
Health coaches are to date still not allowed to prescribe any diets. As only dietitians are the only professionals that are regulated by the law and are governed by ethical codes in order to make sure they always work to the highest standards possible. Minimum requirement will be a Bachelors in Dietetics or an associated science degree that has a postgraduate diploma or higher degree in Dietetics.
The process starts with engagement. Engagement and building trust will be established by attempting to build a rapport. Several factors will be included in this process. Essential traits needed are eye contact, genuineness, good voice, good energy, warmth, and an overall feeling of connectedness, in addition to being comfortable and relaxed in the exchange.
Being able to listen, be supportive and have positive body language and physical gestures is essential too. Rapport is vital in the initial coaching session, however, this should also carry on into every session thereafter. Although rapport is vital, a coach should always be careful of not becoming too close with their clients. As this can often create a barrier, as too emotionally attached may not be beneficial.
